Adult Bullying in the Age of Social Media: Identifying Group Mobbing and Social Media by Mandy Marchola is very good book and goes straight to the heart of adult bullying and mobbing. It covers all the techniques which are used against targets of abuse and explains why people behave as badly as they do.

It explains:

  • The smear campaign.
  • How the mob works.
  • The type of people who instigate the hate campaign.
  • How to handle the mob and mobbing.
  • Why people love to join a mob.
  • Why most people like to bully and abuse other people.
  • How to care for yourself.

Social Media has created a whole new platform for bullying. While a number of publications refer to children being bullied, or workplace bullying, very little addresses the little known area of Adult Bullies and Mobbing.  More information on Social Media can be viewed here.

Sound, effective strategies are offered to recover from the painful experience of being mobbed by a group. This book provides an excellent overview and understanding of how someone can be bullied, mobbed and ostracized, while the bullies remains anonymous. It also covers the devastating effects of Mobbing, which can lead to rapid declining mental and physical health, and ultimately suicide.

The influence of the bully over the group is highlighted by comparisons and examples of pack behavior. Knowing there are options, and that others have experienced bullying and mobbing, and have survived, can bring comfort to someone who is currently experiencing mobbing. Mobbing is abusive, destructive, aggressive and completely overlooked, while the victims languish in silence. This book includes the very personal experiences of the author who suffered with the shame and despair of a social mobbing, affecting every area of her life, right up to the point of attempting suicide.

Mobbing needs to be recognized as a criminal offense. There is a need for the public to wake up to the immense damage and very ignored aspect of mobbing as pertaining to modern society, acknowledging the victims and holding the perpetrators accountable.

Misleading and damaging information can be transmitted through Social Media and mobbing needs to be perceived as a criminal offence. There is a need to wake up to the immense damage and very ignored aspect of mobbing as pertaining to modern society.

I would recommend this book to anyone who cares about their community, children and their own integrity and personal development. If you are in a mob (toxic group or vigilantes) reading this book may wake you up to the way you are being used to attack innocent members of society and just how easy this manipulation is. Unfortunately a lot of people and not mature or honest enough with themselves to wake up to what they have done or are still doing.

Bullying is widespread. Surveys suggest that over half the population has experienced or witnessed bullying at some time in their lives. Even this figure may be conservative.

Being bullied is an unnecessary hell. It destroys individuals, wrecks families, devastates lives and livelihoods, and costs both employers and the State dear. It does not toughen people up, instead it weakens, disempowers and destroys. It does not aid survival, instead threatens our existence. It does not promote long-term growth and prosperity, but favours short-term expediency at the expense of the long term. And, as with other forms of violation and trespass, only those who have suffered it fully appreciate the sheer awfulness of daily unremitting abuse that has no answer, no reason, no value and no end. In the last decade of the twentieth century, workplace bullying is, in my view, the second greatest social evil after child abuse, with which there are many parallels.

Mobbed!: What to Do When They Really Are Out to Get You by Janice Harper

Is everybody out to get you? Are you being bullied and shunned not just by one, but by many? You may not be paranoid, you just might be being mobbed. In Mobbed! What to Do When They Really Are Out to Get You, anthropologist Janice Harper, a regular contributor to Psychology Today and The Huffington Post, explores the group psychology behind collective aggression at work, school, the military, church or community. Unlike other anti-bully books that focus on "evil" people or "psychopath bosses," Harper shows how and why even good people will engage in inhumane behaviors in group settings—and what targets of their aggression can do to protect themselves once it starts. From studies in animal behavior to showing how administrators communicate behind the scenes when they want to eliminate someone, Dr. Harper takes the reader on an exploration of the underbelly of human nature to show step-by-step what happens to the pack when a leader—whether an alpha wolf or a disgruntled boss—wants one of its own to be gone.

Written by an anthropologist with expertise in organizational cultures and warfare, whose approach to workplace aggression has been cited as “paradigm shifting,” “fascinating,” “insightful,” “refreshing,” “provocative,” and “a voice of sanity,” Mobbed! A Survival Guide to Adult Bullying and Mobbing explains the primate behavior that humans engage in when interacting in groups and how to stop it, and protect yourself, at any stage.

This book has great therapeutic value with analysis of often undetected manipulative patterns in destructive relationships which is both compassionate and profound. Many people will find it and eye opening reading experience and maybe even a mirror of their own lives.

The book covers emtional abuse in great detail and although the scars of this kind of abuse may not be visible they do run deep. Emotional abuse is all around us, in couples, in families, in communities and in the workplace. As the book title suggests it can be regarded as a virtual  murder of the soul which society turns a blind eye to and even condones this form of abuse.

The book contains several case studies and demonstrates the psychology of the abuser as well as the target of abuse. The book is a call to recognise and understand emtional abuse and, most importantly, to overcome it. Sophisticated yet wholly accessible, this landmark account is vital reading for health professionals and victims of abuse, as well as for the concerned public.

On May 17, 2014, Admiral William H. McRaven addressed the graduating class of the University of Texas at Austin on their Commencement day. Taking inspiration from the university's slogan, "What starts here changes the world," he shared the ten principles he learned during Navy Seal training that helped him overcome challenges not only in his training and long Naval career, but also throughout his life; and he explained how anyone can use these basic lessons to change themselves-and the world-for the better.
Admiral McRaven's original speech went viral with over 10 million views. Building on the core tenets laid out in his speech, McRaven now recounts tales from his own life and from those of people he encountered during his military service who dealt with hardship and made tough decisions with determination, compassion, honour, and courage.

Told with great humility and optimism, this timeless book provides simple and universal wisdom, practical advice, and words of encouragement that will inspire readers to achieve more, even in life's darkest moments.

Kindness: Change Your Life and Make the World a Kinder Place by Gill Hasson

Rediscover kindness and rediscover your worth

Have you ever helped someone out of instinct, because not helping never even occurred to you? Remember how surprised you were at their gratitude? It is easy to feel like kindness and gratitude are becoming rare in the world today, but the truth is that it is all around you — you just need to learn how to see it. Kindness shows you how to do just that, and inspires you to take part with tips, ideas, recommendations and advice. You will learn to see yourself and your surroundings in a kinder, happier way.
Kindness is not people-pleasing; people-pleasing comes from a place of anxiety, while kindness is borne out of empathy. Kindness expects no reward or recognition, and is just as beneficial to the giver as the receiver. Kindness can be a grand gesture, or something as simple as a smile. It can be quiet or loud, simple or complex. This book helps you internalise the fundamental truth that kindness does not require wealth or possessions, or material giving at all — whatever you have to offer is enough, and it may just change someone’s life.

Learn how to:

  • See the silver lining and take care of yourself in difficult times.
  • Do and say kind things when you're not feeling very kindly.
  • Sustain the warm feelings that come from helping others.
  • Express kindness even when other people are rude or critical.
  • Enjoy self-care and treating yourself.

Opportunities to be kind present themselves every day, and here you’ll learn how to notice them. Your self-esteem and confidence will grow as you discover the pure joy of helping others, and you’ll feel more comfortable allowing others to help you. In a world where kindness seems to get lost in the shuffle of worry, anxiety, aggression and worse, Kindness shows you how to bring it back into the light.
